Tab does not indent bulleted or numbered lists

I must have hit a button somewhere to disable this.... you know how
when you are in a bulleted or numbered list (in my case, I am making
outlines for school), and if you want to indent the list

For example:
I. Main Topic Here
a. Sub Topic Here

You simply have to press tab after pressing the return key.

However, when I press the tab key, I get a plain old tab, instead of
indenting the list.

I can use the Indent button on the formatting palette, but this method
takes much more time and is less efficient and more difficult to do for
every line I need to do that with. How can I restore the original
setting?

By the way, I'm running Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac Version 11.1
(040910) on a PowerBook G4/1.5ghz/1.5gb RAM/OS X 10.3.9.

Any troubleshooting suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Ryan,

Check Tools> AutoCorrect> AutoFormat As You Type, and make sure you didn't
uncheck Automatic Numbered Lists. Although, you'd be better off creating
your own numbering styles, but that's a subject for another day :).

You could also go to Format> Bullets & Numbering> Outline Numbered and
choose the style you want there.

The box was already checked, and the bullets and numbering window from
the format menu just lets me change the style; there is no setting
there to fix the problem I am having, pressing tab to indent a list.

Hi Ryan,

In WinWord, there's a setting in "Tools > AutoCorrect options > AutoFormat
as you type" for this, something like "Tabs and backspace set left indent"
(terrible description BTW).

I don't see that in MacWord2004.

Maybe you're better off with the shortcut keys for OutlinePromote and
OutlineDemote anyway, since they work more reliably and are independent on
any option setting: Control+Shift+LeftArrow, Control+Shift+RightArrow.

Klaus

It's in Word | Preferences, Edit, just by the way--thanks, never noticed
that difference. I've lost track of what "box" ryan was referring to as
already checked, that may be it.

Bingo! That last setting was what was wrong.

It is nice to know the Ctrl+shift+arrow trick, too; didn't know that
shortcut was there.

Thanks everyone for your help.
