Tab not working change change numbering levels

When needing to change numbering levels one can normally use Tab or Shift+Tab
or alternatively the increase or decrease indent buttons to change levels.
The Tab or Shift+Tab will not work now. We can only use the indent buttons to
change numbering levels. Any thought on how we can get the Tab and Shif+Tab
to work again with the numbering.

You don't say what version of Word you have; in this case, it makes quite a
difference:

Word 2000 and earlier: Tools | Options | Edit: Tabs and backspace set left
indent.

Word 2002 and 2003: Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type:
Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces.

Word 2007: Office Button | Word Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options |
AutoFormat As You Type: Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces.

And anyone who wants to argue that it doesn't take more clicks to accomplish
some tasks in Word 2007 is welcome to step in now!

When you are setting options, there are definitely more steps in Word 2007.

Thank you so much. That was very helpful. I should have mentioned the version
- so sorry. But I am going to keep the information for all the version anyhow
and am most grateful for your reply.
