tab stops

I'm using the elegant resume template in Word and I'm trying to create a new
tab stop. When I place a left tab stop on the ruler and then select the
text and hit tab, the cursor just moves off to another section of the page.
The text I want to adjust to the tab stops doesn't move. Any ideas what I
might be doing incorrect here? Or how to correct this? Thanks.

Word's résumé templates are set up as tables so Tab goes to the next cell.
Ctrl+Tab will go to a tab stop. Display table gridlines (Table | Show
Gridlines) so you can see what you're dealing with.
