Table autoformat problem

I am using Word 97 at work. I'm trying to apply autoformat to some tables.
Most times it works ok. Sometimes however a table is quite long and goes
across the page. In this case I have turned on 'headings' so the heading
repeats on the next page. Now, this seems to do a fine job of mucking up
autoformat. In my case the problem is that the format which is applied to
the heading also seemed to be applied to many other rows (totally random as
far as I can see). I turned headers off and this seemed to resolve the
problem in SOME of the tables. I then turned headings back on so that the
same format of heading was applied to the table on both pages (ie, in the
case where the table was split across a page).

Unfortunately in some of the tables I just cannot get the autoformat to work
when a table is split across the page. The formatted heading won't appear.

What am I doing wrong. And is there a better way to handle the whole thing?
I suppose the point of autoformat is that it is supposed to save time but I
find I am wasting more than I am saving!!!
