table captions out of sequence

Hi, I am using Word 97. I have been inserting table captions happily for
years (Insert, Caption) without any problems.
I have just inherited a document and in one place the numbering is out of
sequence.
I have done the Select All, Update, to no effect.
I have also selected the caption which is out of sequence, right-clicked and
selected Update Field.
I have also toggled the codes to see if there is anything different in it
but it is the same as the others.
I have also deleted and reapplied the caption.
I have clicked the Show/Hide button to see if there is anything lurking
untoward in the document but it seems OK.
I have also done a search for the caption style. It highlights the caption
and when I press Next it highlights the paragraph mark at the end of the
caption suggesting that there is something hidded there. However, it does
this on all the captions, even those which are in sequence so this does not
seem to be the answer.
I am at a loss to know what to try next. Has anybody any suggestions please,
preferably which don't involve VBA.
regards,
Carol

G'day "Carol" <[email protected]>,

ye olde caption has ye olde list numbering set to the same list
template as another style.

Redefine the caption style to have its own list numbering template and
all is sweet.

Hi Carol

Two things to try:

1. Make sure there are no un-accepted tracked changes in the document.

2. Make sure that none of the fields are in hidden text.

Hope this helps.
