How do you create a Table of Contents with a custom style? I have created a style I named "Section Heading" that I would like to build a TOC for. I can't seem to find the options for TOC that were available in Word 2007 for PC. The Document Elements wizard only lets you use Heading 1 / Heading 2 / Heading 3 for TOC creation. When I use the wizard it dumps every heading style field in the document into the TOC which I have to go and delete but then if I update the fields they all come back. How do I create a custom TOC?

Also the TOC is left aligning on the roman numerals not on the text. How do I fix that?

Thanks

Drew

Also my Section Heading style is numbered (I,II, III) but when it creates a TOC it left aligns on the roman numerals not on the text so the text is wavy.

Hello Drew -

I won't give you the complete answer but I will tell you that the Document
Elements are pretty much intended as "canned" features. If you want serious
customization & control you have to go deeper into the workings of the
program. As for the TOC, for example, if you use Insert> Index & Tables>
Table of Contents - Options you'll find the versatility you're looking for.

Have a look at the masterwork of Clive Huggan beginning on page 66 and while
you have "Bend Word..." open take a gander at the menu location cited above
for a prime example of his practicing that about which he preaches :)

I can understand why you took the approach you did in linking the documents,
but that's what's causing the reformatting problem. You'll find more on
other approaches & insights in that same document, such as the beginning of
page 89 referring to Styles & Templates.

Thanks for the reference!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. First problem solved.

Now if I can just fix the numbered list alignment problem - I'll dig through "Bending Word" to see if it is there - has to be a basic style setting.

Thanks again!

Figured it out - the tab stops for the TOC1 style were messed up. Fixed those and now it looks perfect.

Thanks for the pointers,

Thanks for the feedback - I'm sure the esteemed Mr. Huggan will appreciate
your comments :) I'm equally certain that you'll find his reference an
indispensible tool if you continue to use Word seriously. Other information
from that same site will also come in handy from time to time.
