Table Of Contents Oddness

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have downloaded a public domain novel and copied it into Word. After changing the font and re-formatting the novel so that each chapter begins on a new page, I re-styled each chapter heading so I can have a TOC. The problem is that when I click on the page number for any chapter, I am not taken to the beginning if it, but instead to the end. I thought that the problem might be that the novel is separated into three parts, with several chapters in each part. I gave each part a different heading that the chapters.

I am trying to create this so that my students will have an online text. So being able to jump to specific chapters will be helpful in a 350 page book.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Why not teach the students to use the Document Map instead so they don't
have to keep navigating back to the TOC in the first place?

Document Map is basically a vertical navigation bar similar to what you
would find on a web page. It's content is automatically generated based on
the Levels 1-9 assigned in the styles that are used in the document. Each
heading in the list is essentially a hyperlink to that part of the document,
but since the Document Map remains in place on the left side of the window
it can be clicked to jump to another heading without having to return to the
TOC. You can turn it on in View menu by selecting 'Navigation Pane' which
also has a Thumbnails panel as you'll see. For a bit more info see Word Help
on the topic: Navigate in a document by using the Document Map

Check the Word Help topic "Navigate in a document by using the Document
Map".

If you re-generate that TOC, those page numbers should come right. The Word
TOC generator inserts destination bookmarks in the document when the TOC
generator runs. It replaces them every time.

But do make sure that your document does not contain any unresolved tracked
changes, otherwise it can be a bit of a lottery whether the TOC points to
the new version or the old version of the text.

Cheers

Shoot. I'm not sure what a document map is!
