Table of Contents spreads throughout document.

I am using Word 2002 and trying to update my Table of
contents. When I update the Table of Contents it spreads
the table of contents throughout my 60 plus page
document. It never use to do this with Word 97. Is there
a solution for this?

What do you mean it spreads it throughout your document? Can you describe
this effect a little more precisely?
