Table of Figs: How do I add text next to a caption?

I would like to generate a table of figures from captions wherein only the
first line of the caption appears in the table, but when I attempt to add
normal text next to caption text it is converted to part of the caption and
thus appears in the table. I also tried changing the formatting of the
portion of the caption I don't want in the table to 'Normal', but this
doesn't work either. I also find no way to specify this special formatting in
the figure table itself.

Is there anyway around this problem short of removing unwanted text from the
table after all updates are complete?
