If you want to insert a table within a table cell, simply click
in the desired cell and choose Table > Insert > Table. Note that
nested tables are not supported in Word versions before Word
2000.
If by "columns" you mean newspaper columns, then you're out of
luck. However, it is possible to split a table cell; the command
is found on the Table menu.
