When I create a table and put text into a cell, the cell border expands with every character typed. How can I stop this annoyance.

The table columns still move. Every character I place in the first cel causes the remaining cels to the right to shrink and shen they shrink to one character wide, the cel in which the characters are being added pushes all of the cels to the right. Still cant figure this out. Any help.
