Taking enterprise project off enterprise

B

Briguy

We have a group of projects that we are supposed to start
on the Project server (to show that they have a schedule
established). Don't ask me why, but the goal is to not
have them updated ever again on the server. I have tried
doing a Save As to the file and saving it to my hard
drive. However, when I reopen it not connected to the
server, I'm not allowed to re-save it. I get a message
that I'm trying to save a non-enterprise project to the
server.

Ignoring the silliness of this process, is it possible to
save an enterprise project as a "normal" Project file that
is no longer associated with the server?

If the word "published" appears in the file name, such as
"xxxxxx.published.mpp" remove the word "published" and then open and save
the project. Let me know if this helps.

Hi Dale,
Thank you for your response. I tried removing Published,
but I still get errors. I suppose I could have users
always connect to the Server and select Work Offline, and
then always work on the offline copy. The server doesn't
care if they ever publish to it again. Would this make
sense?

OK, here's another way to do it. When a file has been saved as an .mpp file
and the project manager wants to work on it, he/she should open Microsoft
Project Professional and log into Project Server selecting the My Computer
account and then clicking the Work Offline button. That will place the user
in My Computer mode so that file saves won't give you the error. The
project manager should only log into Project Server normally if he/she need
to open and save an enterprise project. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,
Oddly enough, I still get the message "You are trying to
publish a non-enterprise project to the Project Server.
The administrator settings on the server do not allow you
to publish non-enterprise projects."

Would there be anything wrong with enforcing the process
that users perform a Save Offline and then always work
with that copy (that is, always working with the project
as if it were an enterprise project, even if they'll never
publish it again)?

Thanks.

A couple of questions:

1. Did you actually log into the My Computer account in the Microsoft
Project Server Accounts dialog box? If you do not see this dialog box when
you log into Project Server, refer to the Resolution section of the
following link on how to solve this problem:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Project Server FAQs/pubnonenterprise.htm

2. When you are saving a project, it sounds like you are automatically
publishing the project as well. Check the following settings:

Tools - Options
Select the Collaborate tab
Deselect any selected checkboxes in the "On every save, publish..." section
of the dialog
Click OK
Do this for every project.

Hope this helps.

I do log in through the Project Server Accounts dialog
box, so I'm sure I'm signing on to My Computer-->Work
Offline. That's why the error message sounded so strange.
I'll try number 2, though. That sounds promising.
