"Task cannot be completed" error

We get the following error message even though a task is
not linked to another task.

"Task X cannot be completed in the time allocated because
there is a scheduling conflict between this task and
another one to which it is linked."

Anybody know what causes this and how to fix?

Whenever I have seen this message, it is usually caused by an inflexible
constraint (such as a Finish No Later Than) somewhere in the project. I
have also noticed sometimes that the task indicated in the warning message
is not always the problem task, or the victim task. So, first of all, does
your project contain any constraints such as FNLT, MSO, MFO, SNLT, etc? If
so, look at the link lines preceding the constrained task, and look for
"backwards bending" link lines, which would indicate that a task needs to
slip, but cannot slip due to the constraint. Hope this helps.

Perhaps the summary task it is under is linked to another task...

Dale,

We have none of the potential problems you cite. Looking
in the Task Info, Task Form, Gantt View, etc. shows no
problematic links or constraints. ... However, we tried
deleting the task and we got a message box saying that
deletion would cause a schedule conflict since the
task "was" linked to another task. Would have any idea why
Project sees this link?

Thanks,
Hugh
