Task duration

Hi,
Is it possible (or wise) to enter a task that has a start
date and end date that spans say 20 work days, but the
resource will only work on the task 5 of those days??
Thanks in advance.

Try the following approach:

1. Enter the task and set its Duration to 20 days
2. Double-click the task and select the Advanced tab
3. Set the Task Type to Fixed Duration and click the OK button
4. Click Window - Split
5. In the lower viewing pane (Task Form), select the Resource who will work
on this task
6. In the Task Form, set the Units for this resource at 25% and click OK
7. Click Window - Remove Split

Following this process should solve your problem. It will allocate your
resource to 5 days (40 hours) of Work over the span of 20 working days.
Hope this helps.

Hale,

Thank you very much for this useful information.
I'm afraid my Intro to MS Project class was insufficient!
I did not know about the task form, and the units %.
Now I can really utilize this tool.

You are not alone. Too many "Intro to Microsoft Project" classes are what I
call "point and click" training. They teach you the features of the
software, but they don't teach you how to really use the tool in an actual
project management environment. Interestingly enough, what I taught you in
my answer to your question in this newsgroup is part of the tool use
methodology that we (msProjectExperts) teach in our Project 2002 Foundations
and Project 2002 Advanced classes, and upon which all of our Project Server
classes are based. Thank you for your kind compliment!
