Task Durations

Hello,

"Another way to think of Duration is the 'window of oppurtunity" during
which the team members work on the task.

We allow an executive 5days to approve a deliverable, but the executive will
only perform 2 hours of actual work on the approval. The Duration of this
task, therefore, is 5 days because this is the "window" during which the
executive perfoms the work"

How can i set this in Project 2007 Professional.

If i change the duration of a task, the amount of work change. If i change
the start date, the finish date move backw or the duration have to change.

How can i set a task during 5 days, only 2 hours work starting on 5 nov
until 9 nov.

Thank you,
Koen

The eaiest way is to insert change the task type to fixed work, make sure the
effort driven check box is not checked, and then type in the work of two
hours, type in the duration of 5 days, an the %units should decrease for this
user. By default Project will actually schedule the work equally across the
5 days.

I find the best UI for this is found by right clicking in the chart are and
selecting the split view.

Ben, could not this also be done via the % unit useage for the resource ??
in this case, we could split up % unit to be like 10% for 5d ??

Just asking...

p.s yeah I know its harder, but what happens if the a folio standard is to
have all projects being effort driven ?

Hi, yes it could, but you would have to manually work out the %, or do a load
of trial and error - why bother when MSP will do it for you. In this case
though the calc is easy, 2 hours of 1 week (assuming 40 hours) is 5%.

Just checked, and fixing the work removes the effort driven check box.

Alternatively, change the task to fixed duration, and change the hours.

The concern here is -- the standard practice for all PM's is to ensure that
when setting up a project via MSP, is to have the Effort driven ONLY. (that
is Effort Driven is Ticked). This makes all published projects consistent
within the EPM folio /PWA. This drives persistent / std process at the
userland level for task updates and pwa views. (Another complexty is that
baselines are always set before pub'ing to PS07 !!)

But, changing a single project at the MSP level, does it have any impact to
PWA views and /or the way Cubes values that is used at the EPM folio level ??

I am asking these question and wondering if you could give a sanity check.
:)-

is this a concern at all ? and can you to confirm that PS07 does not behave
in a flaky manner ??
