"Task Only Work"

There is a resource, "Task Only Work" in my list of resources in
Portfolio Analyzer views. This resource is not in my Enterprise
Resource Pool and I have not been able to find any documentation about
it. Can anyone shed some light on what this resource is and how
project is using it?

I am assuming you are Project 2003 server? If so I just spend quite a bit
of time working this issue with Microsoft - The Task only work in Analyzer
is supposed to represent the hours in your projects where there is no
resource assigned. So if you go to View/ Resource usage you would see a
resoure name "Unassigned" The hours for the Unassigned resource should equal
the "Task Only Work" hours in Analyzer. Check this to make sure that it does
though... ours were about 25% that didn't match and 75% that did. So I would
suggest you filter for the task only work projects and analyze each one - you
need to also watch the date range on this. If analyzer is only looking at
say 2006 forward you will need to filter those hours prior to 2006 in MS
project in order to see if it is accurately reflecting the hours in both
places. If this is not accurate we ended up having to do some updates that
are too details to go into here. I'd be interested to know what you find.
Hope this helps

To piggyback on Kathleen's excellent answer, you set Task Only Work by doing
the following:

1. Apply any Task view, such as the Gantt Chart view
2. Right-click on the column to the right of the Task Name column and click
the "Insert Column" item on the shortcut menu
3. In the Column Definition dialog, select the Work column and click the OK
button
4. On any tasks in the project, enter an estimated amount of work in the
Work column
5. Right-click on the Work column and select the Hide Column item on the
shortcut menu

When you save and publish the project, and then the system rebuilds the OLAP
cube, you will see the Work entered as Task Only Work in your Portfolio
Analyzer views. Hope this helps.
