Task pane in Powerpoint does not display correctly

After using Office 2003 for a few months, the task pane in Powerpoint no
longer displays correctly. When choosing a new slide layout, design template,
etc, the icons are not visible. The mouse-over icon text still appears if I
move my mouse over the area where the icon should be, but the icons
themselves are not there. I am running Office 2003 on a Windows XP Home
Edition laptop with Service Pack 2 installed.

I would first try to run Detect and Repair from the Help menu. Then I would
verify that all updates have been installed, i.e. Service Pack 1. The third
thing I would do is update the video driver. Let us know whether any of those
are of help.

A person I support is also having the same problem. I have followed all of
your suggestions (reinstalled Office, verified it is fully patched, updated
video drivers) and the problem still persists.
