Task requests or meeting requests are received as e-mail only

For some reason when I try to allocate tasks or create meetings using
Outlook, the recipient receives them as e-mails and not as tasks or meeting
requests. As a result I lose all Outlook Task/meeting functionality which
rather defeats the object? Any ideas?
