Task splits after task is done

I have tasks that have split, got put off for a while, then moved back
to an earlier finich date, but still have the little dotted line after
the work is done extending out. The Finish date for that task is the
end of the dotted line. Has anyone else had this same problem? How do
I remove the extraneous dotted line so the task's finish date is
correct?
