Task splitting

Would project split a task automatically? I thought you had to perform this
operation. If so, why would project do this for you. I am using project
server 2003.

A couple of possible causes:

1. Your organization uses the "Hours of work per day or per week" method of
tracking. A team member enters a "0" in their PWA timesheet on one or more
days in the middle of an in-progress task.

2. You level resource overallocations in a project using the built-in
leveling tool with the "Leveling can create splits in remaining work" option
selected in the Resource Leveling dialog.
