Jamie,
What do you mean, "unlock"? Are those fields greyed out for you? What
version of Project are you using? Is the file read only? Are you using
Project Server?

Hi John,

Yes the fields are greyed out. After entering initial start and finish
dates, they are now greyed out, making it impossible to edit. Going through
Project/Project Information doesn't make any difference. As a collaborative
group, we are using individual MS Project 2007 software programs, not Project
Server

Tks for responding.

By default MS Project will grey out either Project Start date or Project
Finish date depending upon the scheduling option chosen.

If you choose Schedule from Project Start date in the Project Information
dialog then the finish date will be locked and vice versa if schedule from
Project Finish date is chosen

However both dates at a given time are not greyed.

You mentioned about using the file in collaboration. is the same file being
shared by many users?

Jamie,
I am interested in having the same set up you have - Multiple users with MS
Porject 2003 installe don their desktop so they can edit the schedule stored
on the file server (not project server) and they all can edit the file when
it is not in use by someone else, otherwise, they will get read only access.
Is that what you do for collaboration?

Hi Jan and Jamie,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You need to tell Project what you mean by a day in Tools/Options/Calendar
tab. You might like to see FAQ Item: 5. Default Working Hours

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

This as an old post, but I don't see anyone providing a detailed answer, so ...

If you are in the area where those values are grayed out you should be able to automatically modify:
1. Expand the task in question
2. Update subtasks' start and finish times
3. Right-click in the upper left corner of the task grid (above row numbers) and select Entry
4. Right-click in the upper left corner of the task grid and select Calculate Project

After step 4 all of those grayed out entries should be automatically populated.

The correct answer without all the garbage filler is: (for MS Project 2007)From the menu bar click on "Project" > in the sub menu drop down that appears choose "Project Information"
A dialog box will appear. The top left drop down will be the "Start Date" and it is here that you can click the drop down arrow to reveal a calendar popup. Select the new start date for the project and then click the "OK" command button in the lower right of the dialog box. Your project will reset with the new start date. To be certain that everything has recalculated I will often right-click in the upper left hand corner box (box above the "1" and to the left of the "i" icon) and choose "Calculate Project." In theory you don't have to do that step, but as with everything MS, check, recheck, and check again for those "features" that creap up everywhere. :) Hope this helps...sorry it took me 3 years to see your post! ;)
