Task update reshedules finish date

K

Kurt Petteloot

Hi,
For some specific type of tasks our PM's like to work with fixed duration
tasks, in order to keep the finish date fixed regardless of actuals recorded
on the task. In practice however the task finish date is pushed ino the
future when actuals are entered. The tasks are 'fixed duration'.

Is there a way to avoid that actuals being accepted results in a shift of
the finish date, so that the PM is obliged to reset the duration of these
tasks back to it's oroginal value.

thanks.

Hello Kurt,

Unfortenately no, that is the way MS Project works. In My experience the
best way is to instruct your projectmanagers to use a baseline (with baseline
finish dates that will not change) or deadline dates. This will you at least
will be able to see what was the original finish date.

Kurt, you can do this. Your PM will need to fix the start date by
making the planned start date the actual start.

Assuming that the tasks are otherwise set up correctly (fixed
duration, etc etc), then have your PMs do this:

Click View - Table - Tracking and for each task, set the Actual Start
Date. This will set the start date and prevent it from being changed
based on actual entries submitted by team members.

Not sure if this directly relates to your issue... but just in case.

We found here as team member inputted their time via PWA, if they placed
more than 8 hours in the actual work row, it pushed out all the project
dates. We have instructed all if you need to enter more than 8 hours for ant
task, use the overtime row for all hours over 8.

That eliminted a similar issue here

Frank,

It sounds as if you are using Fixed Units or Fixed Work, which will
roll anything more than 8 hours onto the next working day. Fixed
Duration doesn't behave like that. Fixing the Actual Start date is
probably the easier solution since it does not rely so much on the
resource's compliance with your instructions.
