Hi

This may be a basic question to many. Iam new to Ms Projects.

I want to add a support task.One of my team member is allocated 10 hours a week for support. When i try to allocate the support task to him for a week, it shows the allocated hours as 40 per week.
How do i create a task which can be assigned total of 10 hours a week. The booking can be done o
any of the days in the week

It appears you are confusing Duration with Work.

Make certain you are showing at least the following columns:
Task Name
Start
Finish
Duration
Work
Resource Name
Predecessor

First, enter information in Task Name, Duration (the number of calendar
days the task will take -- in this case it's 5), Work (the number of work
hours that will be used -- in this case it's 10).

Second, establish the predecessor task. Project will automatically
determine the start and finish dates.

Third, assign the resource.

Yes, it is possible to create a task that has no Work and no Duration to
accomplish what you wish. In your project plan, creating a task with 0 days
Duration will create a milestone task, but don't freak out. You can then
assign people to this "empty" task at 0% Units and publish the project.
Once you have done this, you can ask your team members to enter their Actual
Work in PWA again this support task. When the Actual Work is updated into
your project plan, the milestone indicator will disappear and you will
eventually see a number of split task indicators on the task.

A word of warning: when you use this method for gathering actual progress
from your team, alert them that the task will not show up on their
timesheets in PWA if they have the "Current Tasks" option selected in the
sidepane on the left. Because the task will always have a Remaining Work of
0 hours, the task will never be considered a Current Task. Team members
will need to taught to use the All Tasks link in the sidepane instead. Hope

I did follow the instruction that you gave. I was able to assign the

duration as 5 days & the work as 10 hours.

Now i have another question. Can i create a task without duration or work.

I want to log all the support call. Actually there is no estimation becos it
is an adhoc task. When there is some work then booking will be done against
it. suggest me what to do in case i need to capture the work for those kinda
of tasks.
