Taskbar Icons?

Ok this is a REALLY simple questions, in office 2003 when ever i load up
outlook for example icons appear in my task bar (bottom right). But when i
close outlook they disapear.

Now what i want is for outlook to run in the background even when i have
closed it down which is what i presume the icons in the task bar are ment to
do. So how do i go about enabling this ?
