TCP/IP issues running Outlook on PB G4 that can not boot intoOS9.x

Hello all,

I have been stuck so far - I have a new Powerbook G4 - It can not boot into
OS9.

I started with a clean install of Outlook - If you run the Outlook control
panel for the first time, it goes out to the exchange server and verifies
the user and the server. So far so good

When you start Outlook, it instantly says there is no Exchange server
available. - looking with a packet sniffer - Outlook never even tries to
see if the Exchange server is there. Some how it assumes it is not there.

I do not have a Sys 9 ping app, the OSX host file in etc/hosts has an entry
for the server. Also I.E. For system 9 seems to run ok.

Has anyone had success with a machine that will not boot into OS9?? Can
anyone point me to a system 9 ping app?

Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob!

Is your network running a DNS server for internal servers? If not,
you'll need not only a Hosts file but also a TCP/IP Preferences file
from a working Mac OS 9 system that points to the Hosts file in the same
location on the working machine. (If you need a working preferences
file, check the very bottom entry in an older blog of mine
<http://homepage.mac.com/theoriginalmeck/blog/>.)

The /etc/hosts file will not be recognized by Classic. You'll need a
separate Hosts file.

MacPing use to be available and very popular for Mac OS 9 and earlier.
If you're looking for a ping app, try this one.

Hope this helps! bill

Nope

I have a valid Hosts file in the sys 9 folder - and I just copied the TCP/IP
perfs from my old powerBook g4 that works just fine... And restarted - no
luck.

Thanks
