Template displaying file path or NOT displaying file path

I have a Word template I created and saved as a 2003 template. Looking at the
file, I right click and select OPEN to open the live file. I then, in the
footer, create from BUILDING BLOCKS the file path and name. I save and close
the document. I double click the template file to open a "new" version of the
template and the file path/name reads DOCUMENT1. I name and save the new
template file to my desktop and assume the DOCUMENT1 will change to the new
file path/name or hold the original path/name from the live template
document. It does not. How do I get it to maintain the ORIGINAL file
path/name?

With a few exceptions, fields do not automatically update in Headers and
Footers. You can usually force them to update by switching to Print Preview
and back again. Alternatively, double-click in the Footer, click on the
field and press F9. However, they should always update before you print
providing you have the option to 'Update Fields before Printing' in the
Print Options dialog.
