Template in Outline Numbered doesn't "stick" to List Number

I defined a multilevel list template within List Number style, on the
"Outline Numbered" tab. I needed to modify a detail, but when I reopened the
numbering window for List Number, it showed the style's list template under
"Numbered" instead of "Outline Numbered". The template I defined under
"Outline Numbered" is still there, but it doesn't seem to be attached to the
style.

In case this has something to do with it, every level of the hierarchy uses
the standard 1, 2, 3 style.

Using Word 2003, Windows XP.

Did you remember to access the numbering options via the Modify Style dialog
box for the List Number style?

Yes, and I'm pretty experienced in working with numbered list hierarchies. I
learned from Shauna Kelly's page, and other sources. But I've never seen the
behavior in which I assign a list template to a style and Word shows another
template for it when I reopen.

To be accurate, the "I" in my note is a co-worker, and I'm trying to help him
get this thing working. He doesn't have a template for the document other
than Normal and he does NOT check "Add to Template" or "Automatically Update",
because he needs to give this to someone else who would not have a template.

Usually, if you do everything correct (as explained by Shauna Kelly), the
dialog box should open to the Outline Numbered tab. If you just click the
Outline Numbered tab, can you then modify the outline-numbered list without
running into trouble?
