template & Master Project

Hi: I've made a template to use for all my projects. Once made they are
inserted into a master list. My question is about custom views. Do I have
to make the template have the exact same custom fields and views as the
master and vice versa? or can just the master have the custom views/tables
and when I insert the single project I fill in the missing info than? Not
sure what is the best way....and on another note, when I remove a project
from the master list, can I just cut and paste it into my master file of
completed projects, or again, is there a better way?
Thanks in advance :)

Renate,
First a bit of background information. When subprojects are inserted
into a dynamic master, which is the default type of master, those
subprojects do NOT actually become part of the master. Rather, the
master only contains a pointer to each subproject. The insertion point
summary line IS part of the master but the subproject tasks themselves
are only available through the link. This pointer structure is
recognizable by the repeating ID numbers in the master.

With that background, views, tables, filters, etc. are independent
between master and subprojects. That being the case, the user can have a
Gantt Chart view in the master which looks completely different than the
Gantt Chart view in the subprojects.

With regard to your second question, cutting and pasting is NOT the best
way to transfer subproject from one master to another. Here is the
recommended way to do the transfer.
1. Open the subproject that you want to remove from the master
2. Open the master where you want to remove a subproject
3. In the master select the insertion point summary line for that
subproject
4. Go to Project/Task Information/Advanced tab
5. Unclick the "link to master" option and hit "OK"
6. Go to File/Save As and save the master to the same name
7. Activate the previously opened subproject and so the same "Save As"
8. Close both master and subproject. If the master asks if you want to
save changes, just hit the "No to All" button (you've already saved
changes)

Now is you want to insert that removed subproject to another master,
just use Insert/Project and you're all set.

Hope this helps.

Thank you John...saves me alot of time, I thought they all had to be the same
before consolidating into a master, and I won't cut and paste!
