template specification for importing files

In Access 2000 there is an Advanced button in the import
dialog that that allows me to create a, for lack of a
better term, template specification for importing files.
I'm now using Access 2003 and I do not see this
functionality. The reason this is a problem is that I am
importing an Excel file where one of the fields has
numbers and text in the same field. Ideally it would
import the entire field as text but it's importing the
text and putting a #NUM! where all my numbers should be.
The Specification dialog box solved this problem in the
past but it looks as though they've taken away this
functionality. Does anyone have a solution? BTW:
Formatting the EXCEL file in EXCEL does not solve this
problem.

That advanced button only appeared when you import a text file...

And, that feature remains intact for a2003.

So, perhaps the file is a "csv", and that does show a excel icon when
browsing for files...but it is a text file...so, when you do the
import...choose a text file...and not excel..

CANCEL, NEXT, BACK, and FINISHED when I try importing an
Excel file that I'm sure has an XLS extension. Are you
sure the Advanced button is available in 2003? Maybe I
has some lesser version or uninstalled feature.

What I am saying is that in a2000 the "advanced" button never appeared when
you import excel files.


The advanced button ONLY appeared when you import text files (both in a2000,
and a2003 this remains the same).

So, I am saying nothing has changed here. You don't get and advanced button
when importing Excel files...and never did.

Not sure why you can't import the spreadsheet. Try exporting the spreadsheet
to a csv file..and then import that into ms-access (use the text file
importing in ms-access).
