I would try mapping a drive letter to the templates area
on your server. And then go to Tools, Options, File
Locations, and the advise where the templates are located
on the mapped drive. Good luck

Do not use Mapped drive letter: always use UNC paths.

Because since Office 2000, Word (and Office) uses UNC addressing: if you
used mapped drive letters to network storage it will work but comparatively
slowly. I recently did a test on our network at work (where the engineers
keep forgetting to set the paths correctly). This is with a powerful Windows
2003 Server, a gigabit network using CAT6 cabling and 360 RJ45 outlets,
where in Word XP, the FileNewDefault command is on the custom Toolbar
(loaded through Start-up.dot).

When the file locations (Documents, User Templates and Start-up) are set
using mapped drive letters, clicking on the FileNewDefault button took 11
seconds to open the New dialog. When the paths were all changed to UNC
paths, clicking on the FileNewDefault button opens New dialog in less than a
second (too short to actually measure with any accuracy).
