I would like to save a slide as a template to be used again and again. I have
found master slide but cant figure out how to same my template as the master
slide if that is even the right thing to do.

i have done that but how do I make that template be the one that opens first
when I open power point

In that case, you need to save it as your default template.

Choose File | Save As, pick Template from the "save as type" dropdown list,
and name the file Blank.POT (or Blank.POTX for PPT 2007).

Two things are important here. One is the location -- it must be in the
appropriate folder, and choosing the "save as type -- template" takes you
there. Two is the file name -- it must be blank.POT or blank.POTX.
