I thought I had the usage of these words sorted but some colleagues disagree
with my usage.

Is Office a suite or a package or both? Word, Excel etc - they are
applications in Office but are they also packages? Can Word be called an
"application package" or it is Office that is the "application package". I
write resources for adult students and want to get it right.

It is a suite - a collection of various programs. Not sure why you would use
the term "package".

While not all encompassing, the five Wikipedia sites below will assist in
explaining some of the common thinking about the different terms.

Many people that post on here to help others do not mind doing research that
is difficult for the poster to accomplish. In this instance, however, the
search could have been accomplished easily for almost anyone by simply using
Google, Wikipedia or Yahoo searches. If you are, in fact, a teacher that is
learning, you should familiarize yourself with online searches for future
reference and also to be able to search out articles that your students will
also search out and plagiarize.

I do not mean the previous paragraph to be mean in any way but this will be
one more learning tool for you.
