Text box link doesn't update

Hello,
I have a dynamic chart on it's own tab with a scroll bar to select the
number of weeks in view at any given time. I added a text box that
references the cell link for the scroll bar to display the value of the
scroll bar (corresponds to the week number). The link works great as long as
I'm in the file. When I close it and re-open, the text box no longer updates
and the formula is not present in the bar.

Can anyone advise what may be happening?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

I can't duplicate your problem. What version of Excel are you using? What
does the formula look like on the formula bar? How did you create the text
box?

Shane,
I'm using Excel 2003 SP3.
I created the text box by selecting it from the drawing toolbar, then
mousing it on the chart. I then clicked the in formula bar, typed the = sign
and then selected the tab with the data source, clicked in the cell, and hit
enter. I've re-created several ones and even a control label box all with
the same result. it works well until I re-open the file, then it no longer
updates.

The file does have external data links, which I select the "Do not update"
upon opening. Not sure if this impacts the operation of the text box (which
is not linked to the external data). It is odd, I have other excel files
with this function (albeit the text box is on the same sheet as the data
source) and it still functions.

Thanks for the help.

Also,
the formula in the formula bar is missing when I re-open, there is nothing
there.

To add a text box to a chart, it is best to begin by activating the chart
(by clicking on it).
In this way the text box is aid to be grouped to the chart
Then you can put the link in the box
Try this and tell us what happens
best wishes

I have uncovered the problem. I left out (forgot) the fact that the
reference cell was a named range. Once I referenced a page!column:row, the
link works.

It's always the little things...

Thanks for your follow-up's though, there are great people in this community!
