Text deletes as I type in Word 97

How do I stop text from deleting when I input new text before it? My text
disappears from the page and I have to type the whole sentence over again.

You are in overtype mode. To toggle between overtype and insert modes, press
the Insert key on the keyboard, or double-click the OVR indicator on the
status bar at the bottom of the screen.
