Text is too long Error

I am assisting a customer using Excel 2000 on a Windows
2000 system. Sporaticly he gets the message with a yellow
triangle and exclamation mark in it: "Text is too long".
Sometimes this happens when spell checking, sometimes when
typing, sometimes when saving the file. the behavior is
erratic and does not happen every time one of these
actions are performed but it is happening enough to be a
nuisance. I am not finding much on this error in the MSKB,
anyone have any suggestions what might cause this?

Did it really say "text is too long" or could have it been "formula is too
long".

From an earlier discussion:
In my testing, xl2002 burped at text longer than 911 characters.
(911 before and after worked ok.)

And I think it has to do with the length after the correction.
