text jumbles when cd burned - PowerPoint

P

prints-ss

Does anyone know what causes the text to jumble when a cd is burned using
PowerPoint? I have deleted all text wrapping, used a fixed resolution, and
can find no reason for my text to jumble. Each slide may jumble differently
each time the cd is played, or not at all. The text box is on the master
slide, with no special formatting.
I am writing a self-paced educational program, so running it from a computer
would be too limiting for participants.

Is this on the same machine or on a different machine?

If the same machine, I would check for an update for your video drivers
first, then try turning down your hardware acceleration. Details on both of
these can be found in this entry from Steve Rindsberg's PPT FAQ:
How to set graphics hardware acceleration back
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm

If on different machines, the problem is probably a font that is on your
machine, but not the other one. For that, check out this FAQ entry to start
with:
Troubleshoot font problems
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00402.htm

Another cause (once in a while) is not having a printer (or print driver
installed). Check out this FAQ entry for help with that one:
How to select a default printer

How to install a local printer driver

I have tried it in 2 machines with the same results. One has office 2000, the
other 2003. The font is ARIAL, which they both have... and I embedded it in
the slideshow. The hardware acceleration is turned down because I don't know
the capacity of the machines other users will have once I get this burned.
The 2 machines are networked with the same printer as a default, therefore
the same printer driver (which is working and I can print from the slide show
on either machine). After I posted this, I also posted to the cd burn
program, in case the problem is on their end... I really am stuck on this
one.

I know this sounds like a strange question, but are the drivers for the
networked printer installed locally?

What version of PowerPoint are you using to create the presentation? Is the CD
an autorun CD that uses the PowerPoint Viewer? Which version of the Viewer?

Here you say that the CD was burned using PowerPoint and later you mention a CD
burning program. How did you burn the files to the CD? What software did you
use?

Do the systems have their screen resolution set identically to one another?
What is the resolution setting? What is the Slide Show resolution set to?
(Open PowerPoint and open the presentation. Go to Slide Show > Set Up Show to
see what the setting for the file is.)

I tried it without the embedding, and it did not work. I have burned this
about every way you can, and have not succeeded in getting rid of this one
problem.

P

I am using 2003. The cd has to be an autorun beccause the users will not
necessarily be computer literate. I tried to burn it directly. My preferred
method is with "Record Now!". The veiwer is the one in 2003.

P

I have set the resolution at every choice on both computers, with a reset. I
have fixed the resolution at every choice in the program as you have
suggested. None of these have helped. The users of the cd will necessarily be
able to set the resolution on their monitors... some of them will not
understand and more than insert the disc and use the mouse to complete the
program.

We installed the slide show on a 3rd computer with 2003. From the cd it had
the same problem. From the program it did not. We opened the viewer on that
computer, and then ran the slide show... from the hard drive... and recreated
the problem. So we have identified the problem as the 2003 viewer.... any
solutions?

How is the text entered? Is it in a placeholder, or a custom text box? Are you
using any add-in or code that processes the text? Is the text copied and pasted
from another source? Is the text animated?

P

The text is in a text box on the master slide with no formatting, it just
appears. No add-ins or codes, it was typed in directly. No animatiions on the
text. I simplified this completely because I have been fighting this
problem... we just identified it as the viewer.... any ideas in working
around the viewer itself?

I tried it (twice... from the program file and and from the folder with the
presentation), it cannot open my slide show.

This is sounding like there is something odd about the file that we're not aware
of. If you can send me the first few slides of the presentation, I could look
at it here and test it. My email address is sonia @ soniacoleman . com.

I tried that, but it didn't correct the problem in the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer.
More info available in the MVP NG.

It doesn't. I've tested her file in the downloaded version of PowerPoint 2003
Viewer. However, Kathy and Enric ran the file on their systems and saw no
problems. It appears to be something in the environment that causes the display
problems when running in the Viewer. It is not the Viewer itself.

Are you using the PPT 2003 Viewer that came on your Office install CDs? I
would try downloading the 2003 Viewer from the MS downloads page, just in
case that resolves this problem.
