Text length?

Have XP (and M/S 200 excel 9.0). I have a box in which text is enter by the
user. The box is a merged cell, 16 rows by 11 columns. After about 1,100
character the text no longer is displayed in the merged cell box. It does
show in the formula bar. I looked in a couple help places and tried some
validation changes to no avail. Is there a specific length of text that can
be entered into a merged cell. If so can it be changed?

Straight out of help:-

Length of cell contents (text) 32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a cell; all 32,767 display
in the formula bar.


Not straight out of help (or out of any MS text really):-

Merged cells are the spawn of the devil, and are a feature put in to cause nothing but problems &
misery to those who succumb to the temptation of using them.
