How can I stop excel completing text when I enter data e.g. if a line above
says "study day" I enter the line below "student" when I enter "s" it will
automatically enter "study day", how do I stop this?

Hi,

Tools>Options>Edit tab - uncheck 'Enable AutoComplete for Cell Values'

Boenerge,

You may know this, but when the autocomplete appears, you can ignore it and just keep
typing. It will go away. Autocomplete can be useful in some situations.

I'm not sure what you mean by ignore, you have to hit the delete key to delete
the remainder of the autocomplete suggestion.

Hitting enter or tab or an arrow key usually means you want to accept that
suggestion.

I would assume that Earl was referring to the *continuation* of typing in
the next value, ignoring what was chosen (displayed) by XL as an
AutoComplete suggestion. Any deviation from the AutoComplete suggestion
*cancels* it.

The problem only comes into play when the next data to be entered is
*shorter* then the AutoComplete suggestion, therefore not allowing a (the)
change to become apparent to XL.

RD,

You're right. I meant just keep typing ignoring the selected text that Autocomplete has
added -- it goes away, like any selected text when you type.

If you wanted to change the text that Autocomplete has put in, you could press F2 to switch
from Enter to Edit mode, then use the left arrow key to move the cursor to the point where
you want to change the text, or use the Backspace key to delete text from the end.

It's a bit of an exercise, to be sure -- Excel worksheets don't behave the way most forms
(both in PC software and on web pages) behave, where you can just click in a field (or tab
into it), putting the cursor there, then move it to wherever you want in any existing text
with the arrow keys. There, everything is in front of you, and there's no Enter Mode versus
Edit Mode to be aware of. But if there many such changes to be made, it can be worth the
discipline.
