Text projection problems (and video)

When I hook a computer up to a tv and tried to run a presentation, the text
is dim, garbled, and almost unreadable. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Also, I get that black box video, but the sound plays. I made sure the file
names were short enough, it was linked correctly, my accelerator settings
were ok and all that jazz. The only way I can get them to work properly is
to play them full screen. I did manage to solve this problem by converting
the video file into another format...but I can remember which one it was. I
think it was MPEG, but unsure.

for the black video see
Videos play correctly on computer but not on projector (black box)

For the dim garbled text, this could be due to a resolution mismatch

if your projector is rated at this resolution

1024x768 pixels, then also set your windows desktop to the same resolution
(on later versions of powerpoint you can also set your powerpoint to a
certain resolution during a slideshow)
