That Thumbnail Problem -- New Clues

G

GLMoore

I have posted previously about problems w/ thumbnails -- the "small" version
not being properly saved into the web. The original post is given below**

The new clue is that I maintain another website on this same computer. This
other web has been online for several years now, was originally created in
FP2000, and imported into FP2002 when we bought that version; it has been
published to the host using the FP publishing function (something that has
never yet taken place with the newer, problemmatical web.)

Now, I can open a page in this other "no problems" web and I can insert an
image on a page using the process I already described to you, and make it a
thumbnail, and when I go to close the page, I get the dialog box asking me
if I want to save the changes to the page, I answer yes and BINGO! I get the
dialog window for saving the embedded files (i.e., saving the "small" image
into the images folder.) This is the dialog that never appears when I'm in
the problemmatical web.

If anyone can figure out what the difference might be between the
properly-functioning web and the one which will not save the "small"
thumbnail images, I would be really grateful.

Thanks,
GLMoore

This issue about FP2002 Thumbnails not saving properly was recently posted:
========
After creating thumbnails using the 'Auto Thumbnails' tool, I attempt to
save the page, but the 'Save Embedded Files' box does NOT appear.
Therefore, the page is saved, but the thumbnails are not saved, and do not
appear next time I open the web after FrontPage has been closed.

I can see that the thumbnails are created in the
"/LOCALS~1/Temp/FrontPageTempDir" folder, as *_small.jpg, but FrontPage
doesn't ever create a permanent copy and the files are lost when FrontPage
is closed.

The answer given was:

=======
You need to import the images into FP prior to using.
=========

But I had the same problem with making thumbnails from images that had been
properly imported into the web via File>Import prior to making the
thumbnails. I have shut the web and rebooted the system, without any
improvement.

When re-open the page and I right-click on the place where the thumbnail
should be (where there is now the little red "X" in a box) and check Picture
Properties, the path indicates that the small versions of the images are
supposedly in the temp directory (here is the path for one of my thumbnail
images as reported in the Picture Properties dialog:
file:///C:/DOCUME~1/GL/LOCALS~1/Temp/FrontPageTempDir/angels2_small.jpg )

However, looking in that folder, I see the images are not listed under the
name shown in this path (e.g., angels2) -- everything in that directory has
a name beginning with "wpe" and then a number. Something about the Save
Embedded Files process has failed to complete.

Is there any cure for this problem? Thanks, if you can assist.

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
3) Open FP and run Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
4) Use File Import to reimport your images (overwriting exiting ones if necessary)
5) Open a page and save it - if it hasn't been saved before it is using the FP Temp Folder
5) Drag the image from Folder List onto a page and then thumbnail it and save the page again
