Hi,
I installed Microsoft works earlier today and have just completed two updates. However, after moving word and excel around the tool bar, and now trying to open them I receive the following message;

The application Microsoft word quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click relaunch to launch application again.
Click report to see more details or send a report to apple.

What two updates? Microsoft or Apple updates? What versions?

Your error was not a Microsoft Error Report but an Apple one. This indicates
problems more at the system level.

1) Verify you have enough free space and Ram on your computer:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/performance2.html>

2) Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
<http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update>

3) Re-install Office 2008 following these directions:

Steps to re-install Office

Let me know if you continue to have problems.

Hello PoppyM,

According to the error you posted it appears that you have run Word as an Application on the Desktop.

In order for Wrod to run properly, the Word.app file must be in the same location as the Office folder. When this is not the case Word will produce the error you have posted.

To fix this issue you can:
#1 - Run the Word.app from its default location in Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/
#2 - Copy the Office folder from Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/ to the new location of Word.app (which is the desktop in your case)

If you elect to go with #1, you can always create an shortcut to Word on your desktop by:
- Right-click on the Word app
- Select "Make alias"
- Drag the alias to your desktop
