"The Archive Attribute" in "File Properties"

I noticed when looking at the attributes of a file that I was having problems
with that the "archive" attribute was checked - what does "archive" mean and
can this cause problems such as lost or unsaved data?

I don't see the relevance with Office.
I suggest you look in Help in your operating system for the meaning of
"archive". You may find something like this:

"The archive attribute marks files that have changed since the last
time they were backed up."

The archive bit does not cause problems such as lost or unsaved data.
