The Assignment Owner / Template Conundrum

J

John Horton

Since I created all the templates in my instance I am shown as the assignment
owner of every task until the eventual owner makes a real assignment. This is
not really a problem but it seems untidy.

When a user does build a schedule and leaves some tasks without a resource
against them I remain the assignment owner.

Lastly when I assist a user with their schedule I then become the assignment
owner. I understand this but am not happy about it.

What I would like is a way to set all assignment ownership to the Schedule
Owner.

It sounds like you are using Project Server 2007. By default, the system
sets the template creator as the Status Manager for every regular task in
every enterprise project created from the template. I think this is a
design flaw, at best, and a very frustrating one indeed. When I discovered
this, I included a special topical section in our Managing Enterprise
Projects book about how to change the Status Manager for tasks. A actual
bug in Project Professional 2007 prevents the PM from changing the Status
Manager for one task and then using the Fill Handle to fill the value into
every other cell in the column. A good workaround is to use Edit - Replace,
but there is a Hotfix that actually fixes the problem. Unfortunately, at
this point, I think there is little you can do until SP1 is actually
released this coming week, and keep your fingers crossed until we all can
determine if this design flaw is rectified. If not, then you will need to
make this a training and performance issue with your PM's. Hope this helps.

There isn't really a way around this. I'm hoping the template issue is fixed
in SP1 but haven't been able to check this yet.

Dale,
I look it up tonight. The books are great! I CRUSHED my boss with the first
chaper of the Orange one. :- )
