The case of the disappearing graphic

I recently reloaded XP Pro + Office onto my PC, and am now having the
annoying problem that when I import a graphic it appears in the Word document
as a blank area on the page. I can only see it if I float it (in front of or
behind text, etc) or if I do a print preview. If I cut (a graph, for
example) from Excel and paste it into a document, I cannot float it and I
cannot see it without a print preview. Did I miss a setting when reloading?
I make a lot of use of Microsoft Office Document Image Writer for exporting
graphics for later importing into a Word Document. Is there a similar
"printer" that creates colour TIFFs or EMF files?

Does this work? Tools, Options, View. Under Show, uncheck Picture
Placeholders?
