the columns, the columns, what what the columns

Hi Winton.
If I get what you are saying, I think what you need to do
first is to set the textbox property for can shrink to yes.
Now set the property for the detail band can shrink to yes.
I think this will remove the empty spaces.
You also may fit the textboxes size to fit the font size
you selected. The way to do this is select the text box
and than select from the format menu > size and >to fit.
I think this will reduce the required space a bit more.
Now in file > page set up at the columns tab set the
desired width etc for each column and also set the across-
down or vice versa.
I think you'll get it going.
Hope this helps.

kudos to anyone picking up on the reference from the subject

anyhow, I am BRAND new to Access. I've got Access for
Dummies sitting on my desk right now. Alas, it seems that
I am too much of a dummy to even be helped by it. So
here's the deal:
I am working with a "stock universe" of over 500 stocks.
These stocks are broken down into 9 sectors and then
subsectors within those sectors. So, some sectors may
have 2 subsectors and some subsectors may have any number
of stocks. Each stock/sector/subsector has been assigned
a value (1-5) denoting relative strength of that
sector/stock/subsector.
I would like to create a report that simply lists the 1-5
value for each stock by sector then subsector. I 've got
the report broken down so that sectors are top, then
subsectors, then stocks--Access for Dummies came through
for me there.
BUT the kicker is that I want this report to fit on ONE
page. This obviously means teeny fonts (which I did) and
lots of columns (which I can't figure for the life of
me). I've gone into Page Setup and done the multiple
columns thing. But, all I'm getting is 3 pages, 1 column
each, with significant gaps in the data.
