'The custom form could not be opened'

Hi all,
One of our clients is persistently displaying the same
error message:
"The default form could not be opened. Outlook will use an
outlook form instead. The object could not be found."

There seems to be plenty of references to this message
occurring on outlook 2000 on the knowledge base and also
elswhere on the net, but the client is outloook 2002 and I
can find nothing relating to this problem on 2002.
We do not and never have used custom forms (to the best of
my knowledge) and I have tried clearing the cache. I have
also reinstalled office xp, all to no avail. Can anyone
help please?
