The file outlook.pst could not be accessed???

When I open Outlook 2000 SR-1 (9.0.0.3821) everything looks normal. I see
all my emails and folders, I can even open the messages (it just takes a
while), however, I get the following message when I try to delete or move
any of the messages: "The file <path>\outlook.pst could not be accessed."
It also just kind of hangs while attempting to download new mail. It says
"Receiving message 1 of <##>" and then gives me as error message/number
0x80040116. The outlook.pst file is in the correct directory. Has anyone
experienced this problem before and do you have any recommendations? Thanks
in advance.

I renamed my outlook.pst file and had the system create a new one. It works
ok with the new one now, but does anyone know how I may be able to fix my
old one?

I deal with this on an almost daily basis. Goto tools;services, and
remove the personal folders, then remap it. If all else fails, remove
the exchange server from there, then remap it too. Works for me, and
we have almost 2000 (up to 5000) users at a time. It actually sounds
like you have network problems... Most of our problems stem from
having a slow network, and we get the same sort of problem you are
getting. If remapping doesn't work, let me know what kind of network
you have going on...

Thanks for the response. I don't have a Tools;Services option... I have
'Options', but don't see anything about Personal Folders in there. Will
removing the personal folders delete everything that I have in them, or is
just a link that's being removed and re-created? FYI: We have a very small
network of no more than 10 PC's running at one time, but there are only 3
users so the network traffic is normally minimal and nobody else is having
problems with their email. All PC's are members of a WORKGROUP. I guess I
could swap out my network card and see if that makes a difference.

run scanpst.exe against the file and see if it comes up with anything.

Do you store the pst-files on a networkshare? Please note that this isn't
recommended by Microsoft as it could easilly lead to disconnetions and
corruptions especially on a slow network.

I ran scanpst.exe and received the following message:

"An unexpected error prevented access to this file. Use ScanDisk to check
the disk for errors, and then try using the Inbox Repair Tool again."

I ran ScanDisk and am still receiving the same error.

If scandisk could't repair the file either, it is very likely that the file
resides on a bad block or on a failing harddisk. I don't think you can
restore this file anymore.

Is the file bigger than/around 2GB by any change?

I fail to see how they can be related. If you loose the connection to a
locally stored pst-file something must be wrong with the local resources one
might think. Any insights in this?

It's about 1.3GB. ScanDisk did not find any errors when I ran it, but I did
not scan for hard disk errors. I'm getting ready to do that right now.

It seems that is most likely the issue... I am able to link to the old .pst
file from the new one I created. I'm copying files from it and am finding
that there are a few files in it that I can't copy but for the most part I
can access most of them.

Better run the scan for harddsik errors than indeed (quite time consuming so
do it at night or something). Some computer manufactures have tools to scan
your harddisk as well without loading Windows. Finding an error on the
harddisk with their tool might help you in getting a new one if warranty
still applies.

I ran the hard disk scan and then the inbox repair tool. The inbox repair
tool was able to access the Outlook.pst file this time... it found errors
and repaired them. Now I can access the file with Outlook, but it won't let
me delete or move any messages. It give me the following message: "Errors
have been detected in the file <path>\outlook.pst. QUit all mail-enabled
applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool." I've done that and it
doesn't find any errors, yet still does not fix the problem. I was able to
export the entire thing to a .pst file. Can I just rename that exported
file to outlook.pst and use that one, or do I have to import it, or is there
something else you would recommend. For now, that's what I did... just
renamed the exported file to outlook.pst and am using that one. It seems to
be working ok. Thanks for all the help.

If it works leave it that way. Better was to connect to the file by File->
Open-> Outlook Data File and then go to your E-mail Accounts settings to
change the default delivery location to the new file.
