THE FIX : Word & Excel slow/hanging - Microsoft -vs- Syamntec

S

steam3801

The old problem is back again (Office2000 and NAV2002 once were
totally and utterly incompatible for the same following reasons)

It's the Office plug-in option in NAV.

It appears that during the last/recent round of updates, a new
navw32.exe file was installed by NAV - nothing wrong with that, except
it now causes a clash with Office2xxx

THE FIX : Open NAV, select Options, choose Miscellaneous and untick
the option to enable Office plug-in

You don't loose any protection from viruses, things are still as safe
as ever (i.e. same level of protection from viruses) - that option is
just an unnecessary burden on your 'puter which you can well do
without, whether it's working or not (same as the email scanning
option in NAV - just slows down email transmissions!)

I suppose we can now look forward to the round of arguments that
existed when it happened with Office2000 and NAV2002 - "It's your
fault" ... "No it's not, it's your fault" ... "No it's not" ... "Well
we're not gonna patch it" ... "Well neither are we" .... funny that
the problem did evetually get resolved during one of the onlone live
Office Updates from the Microsoft web site (although no-one will ever
know whether it was a patch by MS to fix Nortons problem, or there
really was a problem with their own Office2000)

You know it makes sense.

I've also experienced this problem since downloading the latest Norton
updates last night (on 7 Jan 2004). I've unticked the "enable Office
plug-in" (thanks for your advice) and this does indeed prevent Word
and Excel files taking an age to open and the "navw32.exe is
attempting to access the Internet" message from popping up every time,
which is what had been happening subsequent to last night's update.
However, another result of last night's update is that double-clicking
on the NAV icon now leads to a wait of many seconds (up to 30) before
the Norton AntiVirus window comes up; similarly, when that window is
up, clicking on 'Options' leads to a wait of several seconds before
the Options window opens. All of these operations were more or less
instantaneous prior to last night's update. The fact that they're now
far from instantaneous suggests perhaps that there's still some
conflict going on, even after I unticked the "enable Office plug-in"
box??

Is there some fix for this, or should I do a 'system restore' in XP to
get back to the state prior to last night's Norton updates? If so,
can I continue to download virus/security definitions-type updates and
continuously untick the 3MB reg update that changed the navw32.exe
file, or will the former only work with the latter in place?

Is it time to give Norton the boot? I've just spent considerable time trying to get to the bottom of this problem with Word and Excel. Shouldn't Norton let me know when there is a potential incompatibility problem? I take it that other Virus protection programs don't create this sort of mess on our PC's?

I found this in another area and think it is your answer

Hi STeam3801

If you scroll through this Word Newsgroup, the Office Plug-in has been
repeatedly causing problems since forever. The latest problem just amplifies
the problem. Our advice is to always keep the Office Plug-in disabled. It
makes not one iota of difference to your security providing system scan is
still active. Even Norton admit this.

Oh hell yes - always been a strong policy of mine. First thing I do
with any client's machine(s) is
a) disable office plugin
b) disable email scanning (not so much broadband, but slows down
sending/receiving emails with dialup accounts. Again, no inherent loss
of security)
c) and in some cases, disable automatic live update. Education of
regular, manual updating is much safer (Live Update does not always
capture *EVERY* product update - other than virus lists - that is
available)

Despite all this, I still prefer NAV over most of the others

Although now ......??

You know it makes sense.

We've found a work around:

1. in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared, rename the
CommonClient.dat to something else.
2. rename CommonClient_old.dat to CommonClient.dat
3. insert the following host entries:
127.0.0.1 sitefinder-idn.verisign.com
127.0.0.1 crl.verisign.com

Try that.
