"The macros in this project are disabled"

Hi,

I have a word 2003 document that has a macro in the document itself (not in
a template). I am trying to run it like this

press alt-f11
select the macro
press F8

I get the error message:

The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or
documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros.

I have read the documentation and it tells me to "open the document with
macros enabled". however, I can't see any option on the open dialog to do
this.

I have read some usenet posts which suggested setting the macro security
settings. I have tried them all but to no avail.

can someone please help me - I'm pulling my hair out here!!

Hi Andy,

Go to Tools > Macro > Security and choose the Medium level. Then (the
missing step) close and reopen the document. On the reopen you should be
prompted to disable or enable macros; choose Enable.

The High or Very High security levels silently disable macros (except signed
macros for the High level). The Low level allows all macros to run, which
has been compared to pulling the batteries out of your smoke detector. If
you want to develop macros, Medium is the only level that makes sense.

Thanks Jay - re-opening the document was indeed the missing step

(and thanks for reminding me about the batteries in my smoke detector too
:))
