the meaning of "{ SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT }"?

I draw a new picture in a document using word2003. But when the document was
reopened, the picture is missing and with only the string "{ SHAPE \*
MERGEFORMAT }". Can someone tell me the reason of the missing picture?
